Interviewer (in Russian): ? Tori Amos!

Tori: Thank you.

Interviewer / Translator: It's great that you're thanking me, although you don't understand what I have said, but I only said good words.

Tori: Yes, but anybody who is called Fiolka Tolstory is rocking.

Interviewer / Translator: Well, it's great to see you here and when I was approaching the radio station I saw a huge crowd of your fans that follow you around everywhere during your world tour, during your first visit to Moscow. And there are several of your fans that are present at the studio right now. And, I would like to ask you how was your flight and what are your first impressions about Moscow?

Tori: Well, my first impressions are that the thinking is really progressive. I've been in interviews all morning and talking with many people. And I, I am just really excited by some of the conversation that I’ve been having with quite a few people.

Interviewer / Translator: What are the interesting questions you were asked, and probably what were your expectations, and did they come true or not during the interviews?

Tori: I've been asked about almost all aspects of composing, and is it a metaphysical experience, or just a skill, a compositional skill. And the idea that it's both, but they wanted to know about the relationship with me and the songs, talking about the idea that songs can be consciousness, that consciousness doesn't have to be in a physical form. A woman asked me how to play. I said, "No, I don't play the piano." The piano plays me.

Interviewer / Translator: We will speak about piano later, but now about the concert that will take place in Moscow. Before you came here you told that you weren't going to make any list of songs that you were going to perform, that once you step onto Russian soil, you're going to decide, you're going to feel the atmosphere. And, so, have you decided, have you made your decision what to play and how?

Tori: Many are fighting to come. They're all right behind me. Like celebrity chicks outside a hot club in New York City. They're all here. There are about 230 of them that want to come.

Interviewer / Translator: You will present your new album in Russia, right?

Tori: Yes.

Interviewer / Translator: Or, will you perform songs only from your new album or different ones?

Tori: Well, I, I decide what the narrative is going to be one hour before I take stage. So, today, since we came in and we sat on the runway for over an hour, with my child grabbing my phone trying to play games, the songs have been coming to develop a story. There has to be a conversation that happens in a concert, and until I take the stage, any changes can happen. And, frankly, any changes can happen during the show.

Interviewer / Translator: It's interesting that you come on tour with your daughter. Do you often take her with you?

Tori: Oh yeah. Because, because I see the world differently with her around. She has been around the world now 6 times. She has been traveling since she was 1. And right after 9/11, she turned 1 on Sept. 5th, 2001. And she came on tour around Sept. 23rd, 2001. So, right after the bombings in New York, and I was in New York City that day, and she was at the beach house in Florida with Husband. So, he and I decided we still need to go and play. It's important to be out there at this time. And we can... I'll let you translate that, but there's a second part to this. Second part. Of all people, because you're Russian, and because of what you've been through, I think you'll understand this. After 9/11, on the radio, the government had dictated certain songs that couldn't be played. So, there was a massive censorship that was happening from the Bush administration. And, things like "Imagine" by John Lennon were censored. Well, you know, that's all it takes for me. If you're going to censor things like that then as an artist I felt like "we need to tour" because they were shutting so many things down. It was an opportunity, don't you see, for them to make everything a security crisis. Well, we had all our venues searched. There were dogs to protect the people coming to the shows. But, it was important to hold a space so that people could get information. It was very hard to get information in the United States after the bombings.

Interviewer / Translator (in background to Tori): ?

Tori: That's right.

Interviewer / Translator: How were your relations with the politics, not as a citizen, but maybe as an artist? ?... very entwined with the politics. Will you explain it to us?

Tori: I'm finding that I'm most effective as a writer when I make my mantra. The personal is political. Internally, if you are feeling as if you're oppressed, as if you can't express yourself, as if you're torn inside with your own demons, then it's very complicated to be a powerful force. The songs want the masses for each one to become a force of nature. So, change will only happen with consciousness. And, to have consciousness you have to know yourself and you have to know your feelings, even the dark ones that hide behind your heart. And then you're a political force.

Interviewer / Translator ? ... come to this consciousness... Right now you're very conscious of what you're singing and about your songs, but in your younger years how did you feel about it? Did you understand yourself, as well?

Tori: When I was two years old, I started to play. And, the songs would come to me then, to visit me. So, I understood then, that they were alive; they had consciousness. At the same time, I was being brought up in a Methodist, a Christian environment. My father is a Methodist minister. And, he's a very complex individual, and I love him dearly, but, now at eighty-two years old, he's much more liberal and open-minded than he was in 1965 when I was two. So, what I would do in order to escape the oppression of the religious dogma is create tunnels, sonic tunnels, to jump through in order to be sitting in a room where they're having a prayer meeting and they can touch my hand and my head with their bibles, but I am on the other side of the universe with the songs themselves playing in my head.

Interviewer/Translator: Tori Amos, ? ... Thank you for your philosophical responses...now we'd like to join the listeners of our conversation. There are listeners on the phone and also listeners have the opportunity to come here and ask you questions. Probably somebody wants to ask you questions. Your songs, your music, is this the reflection of your inner world, or is this some address to the world and some attempt to change it?

Tori: Well, I think when you're on your own discovery, when you’re on your own path and you're trying to hear what your soul is saying to you, not just be what everyone else wants you to be. And, that's a struggle. We all have to say, "Am I being who I want to be, or am I being who they want me to be?” The songs come to remind me that each one is a fragment, but whole, complete in herself, but a piece of the ancient feminine. The ancient feminine was shattered and divided and dispersed over five-thousand years ago when the patriarchy took control, and that's what we've been living with for the last five-thousand years. So, this is beyond being a feminist. It's not about, "Are you a feminist?" It's beyond that. It's about equality for all beings - children, men, women. Feminine consciousness is in men as well and it's about the balance. And the songs talk to me about trying to find the male aspect of self. And, wow, that was some fascinating discovery.

Interviewer / Translator: Very often you're referred to as a "rock feminist."

Tori: Well, that's kind of cool. *laughs*

Translator: So, you like it?

Tori: My daughter would like that.

Interviewer / Translator: Why, is she a feminist?

Tori: Oh, yes, my goodness. My father, the Methodist minister, came up to her recently... and, first of all, you have to know she was born with a bindi, you know, like from India - a red dot in the middle of her forehead. And, it's very present, you see it. And, my father said to her, “Natashya, the Lord God has blessed you with his love and his forgiveness, and that is his gift to you.” She said, “Granddad, who are you kidding? The Christians would have burned me as a witch marked by the devil and, let's not kid each other, the goddess Kali has blessed me with her markings, Granddad.”

So I've been reorganizing things around the house and I got to thinking about putting my Tori collection away in a box or something as it gets very dusty and I'd like to keep it out of the sun... But I thought that would be less than stellar accommodations for such a lovely collection of things.

So! I thought I would ask what you all do with your Tori stuff and see if I might steal one of your ideas? Generally mine sits on the top shelf of a bookshelf in my office... but I was thinking perhaps I would decorate a box (it'd have to be a biggun) like a hope chest or something so my Tori collection has a pretty place to rest its head. I dunno.

Where's yooour Tori? On a shelf? In a bag? Scattered about many shelves? Tucked away in a fireproof safe? Do tell...
